Dogs’ sense of smell reaches far beyond our olfactory abilities as humans. According to the informative article by NOVA, dogs’ sense of smell is between 10,000 to 100,000 times as acute as ours. Having up to 300 million olfactory receptors and independently wiggling nostrils, along with a special organ (vemeronasal organ) that specifically detects and differentiates pheromones, dogs can detect smells we have no chance of detecting. The researcher in the article likened their ability to being able to detect one rotten apple in two million barrels!
Aromatherapy is the use of aromatic compounds and scents for physical and psychological well- being. It is an ancient healing modality that has been used for issues with anxiety, depression, pain and more. Japanese corporate office spaces have been diffusing lemon scent throughout their building for a very long time and have seen decreased stress, less sick days, increase in productivity and more alert staff. Nice smells are something that make us feel good inside, and there is a science behind it. This science not only affects humans, but animals as well.
So how does aromatherapy play a role for our beloved furry family members? There is potentially an emotional link that Vicki Rae Thorne, of Earth Heart Aromatherpy talked about in our interview. Fear is a part of life. No human or animal gets out of their earthly experience without having fear at one time or another. Typically, we fear a situation or object that is recurring, and we anticipate and experience anxiety along with fear when we think about or participate in that given experience. Dogs are no different, and you may have seen you dog’s fear affect him or her in different ways, causing running, shaking, diarrhea, behavioral issues and more.
Common causes of fear in dogs include:
- Fireworks
- Traveling
- Grooming
- Thunderstorms
- Transition between foster homes
Aromatherapy suggestions for dogs:
As mentioned, dogs’ sense of smell is VERY sensitive, so it is important to use the right dilution when using aromatics, essential oils, etc. Vicki, as an experienced herbalist and aroma therapist, has created products that are based on research and the needs of dogs.
Canine Calm is a great place to start with exploring this solution for dog anxiety. If you wish to explore on your own and make your own blends, make sure you do your due diligence in researching.
Uses of Canine Calm:
Canine Calm comes in three forms:
- Wipes
- Spray
- Roll On
Application can be made to your dog’s inner ear flaps, back or to blankets and bedding in the car or crate. Spray your fingertips and rub on your dog’s inner ear flaps or coat. Roll on the product directly or use the wipes to apply.
