Buy gear for your dog and feel good that you are supporting a sustainably minded non-profit.

Repurpose, reuse, recycle. Have you heard this saying? Now you can buy gear for your dog and feel good that you are supporting a sustainably minded non-profit. Mister Migs ,LLC is the non-profit that combines fashion, repurposing and community to create a brand that is making a difference in style. I had a chance to talk to Rosemary, the production manager and head designer for the company, who told me the story as well as the up and coming design lines!

“At Mister Migs, we not only create sustainable clothing for dogs, we also provide work training for young adults with autism and developmental disabilities by giving positive reinforcement and teaching professional practices that they can carry with them into many different career paths. In collaboration with Wow In-Sync, Inc., a 501 (c) (3) organization, Mister Migs provides real-life work and community experience to marginalized youth,” Rosemary shares with me.

“Personally, I am a master tailor of menswear, I have extensive experience in Bridal design, and I have years of experience teaching in college education.  Always having loved dogs, I live my dream everyday working with Mister Migs. It started with me sending my students to the company for externships, and now I run the design and production. I am now the Master Pet Tailor.  I could not be happier!”

As I continued to chat with Rosemary, I learned more about the company, designs and materials. Mister Migs gets all of the material and fabric through donations by individuals, schools, community organizations and other donation events.  Most of the material is denim, which will never go out of style, according to Rosemary.

I asked Rosemary why people dress up their dogs, and she had a surprisingly quick answer for this question. “People dress up their dogs for fashion, fun and functionality! When you have a dog, you are also constantly carrying things like leashes and poop bags to make sure you are prepared. These clothing items make this easier by providing a place to put it all. Also, with larger dogs, who do not have as much of a fashion sense in most cases, functionality is also important. Larger breeds of dogs have been bred to work throughout history. Putting a bag or vest on a large dog gives them a sense of purpose that is visibly obvious through behavior and energy. It is really great to see your dog feel that way!”

Rosemary creates a minimum of four collections per year. Collections like “Rag Muffin” and the upcoming “Tattered” line that will be releasing soon.  She follows human trends and turns them into top notch dog get-ups that will get your dog all of the attention!
