Cats are not always known for cuddling and “bonding” in the traditional form like our sweet doggies, however, cats have many ways to relate to us: purrs, rub-bys, ignoring us, and licking; just to name a few. We decided to delve into some of the reasonings behind licking and what it can mean for them as felines and you as their parents.

When your cats lick you, they’re paying you a huge compliment:

Yes, believe it or not, they are complimenting you, maybe the meal was just right or the belly rub or petting was just right on! More so, it can mean security for your feline. A tongue bath from your cat is an indication that she feels totally safe in your presence. You are truly a member of her family, and she reinforces that by cleaning you like her mother cleaned her when she was a kitten. Go mom or dad, you done well!

Cats lick as a means of social bonding:

Cats and kittens groom each other, and older cats who aren’t related but get along well also spend time grooming one another. My cats used to do it all them time, it was fun to watch the exchange. Often, they’ll get the spots that are hard for a cat to reach by themselves, such as the top of the head and inside the ears. Scent exchanging through grooming also increases the bond between a pair of cats.

Ouch! Why does your cat licking you hurt or feel so rough?

It is often funny to have that tongue reach out and scratch ya??? Your cat’s tongue feels like sandpaper because it’s covered with papillae — backward-facing hooks made of keratin, the same material that makes your cats claws . Papillae helps with grooming and eating for them, they can really clean a bone if you let them!

Your cats might be licking you because of anxiety

To be truthful and mindful, not all licking is good for cats/kittens.  Cats who lick themselves bald are often trying to comfort themselves because they’re stressed. If they are really having issues they can lick and suck on fabric, plastic or even your skin. Be mindful of your cats/kittens and watch them if there is excessive licking, it can definitely be a sign of other issues.

Be patient when your cats lick you, if the licking bothers you after awhile or they were never trained otherwise, gently distract them and give he or she a toy and be interactive with them. This ensures love and comfort for them while instilling other more favorable habits.
