We met up with Pet Pedia and got some great insight from them directly about the most popular cat breeds in the world. I will tell you this, cats do seem to dominate the homestead!
Cats are the most popular pets worldwide. That is supported by the fact that there are over 600 million domesticated cats. They are clean, calm, and easy to take care of, making them the perfect animal companion. Just like dogs, there are many different cat breeds with different characteristics that make them unique.
According to Petpedia, there are over 43 cat breeds in the US alone, and here are some of the most popular ones:
Devon Rex
Compared to its counterparts, the Devon Rex is a relatively new cat breed. Discovered in Devonshire, England, in 1960, this very active feline has been domesticated and has become one of the most popular pets worldwide. They are often referred to as pixie cats due to their unique appearance.
Abyssinian Cat
Originating from Ethiopia, Abyssinians have quickly become one of the world’s most popular cat breeds. Elegant, clean, and low maintenance, this cat is an ideal pet for all cat lovers. They are mainly known for their hyperactivity and playful nature. Abyssinian cats are also very fond of heights and trees and love the outdoors more than most cats.
Maine Coon
The Maine Coon is one of America’s oldest and the most unique domestic cat breeds. The official state cat of Maine, they are known for being more intelligent than the average house cat. They are also known for their size and dog-like behavior. Even though the origin of this cat breed is not conclusive, it is speculated that it is a crossbreed between the Norwegian Forest Cat and the Siberian. The Main Coon is now the second most popular cat breed in North America and the third most popular in the world.
Persian Cat
The Persian cat is one of the first domesticated cat breeds. Originating in Persia (modern-day Iran), they became very popular in the 17th century when Italian merchants traded them internationally. They are best known for their reserved nature, as well as their round face and thick, long fur. Their unique fur means they require more grooming and attention than most other cats.
